Indian guru offers to ‘cure’ gay men with yoga
A guru has told gay men if they do not want to be arrested under the new gay sex ban in India, then they should come to him for yoga classes to be ‘cured’.
Baba Ramdev, a spiritual leader known for popularizing yoga, has said he would be able to ‘cure’ gay people in a matter of days.
‘I invite them to my ashram. Two people belonging to opposite sex will be kept in one room for a few days and they will be cured of homosexuality,’ Ramdev said.
Welcoming the Supreme Court banning gay sex, he added: ‘The practice of homosexuality is unscientific, unnatural, uncivilised, immoral, irreligious and abnormal.
‘Homosexuality is not genetic. If our parents were homosexuals, then we would not have been born. So it’s unnatural.’
Ramdev also suggested the contributions of the gay community to fields like science and economics should be ignored, and said he will pray nobody else will ‘turn’ homosexual.
While known for building his yoga empire, Ramdev has recently turned to political issues.
Back in 2009 when the Delhi High Court decriminalized consensual gay sex, he gave evidence at the ruling saying it would ‘encourage criminality and sick mentality’.
LGBTI equal rights activists have responded angrily to Ramdev’s comments, with one describing it as a ‘fundamentally irrational, unscientific, illogical and brainless statement’.
Harrish Iyer told Hindustantimes.com: ‘I respect Baba Ramdev for his yoga lessons, but only for that.
‘Science has proved that homosexuality is not a disease. It has even been delisted from the list of mental illness by psychiatric institutions all over the world.
‘If Ramdev thinks he has another version that can disprove science, let him publish it.’
