11-month-old baby girl mauled to death by family pet
An 11-month-old baby has been mauled to death by a dog.
The little girl was attacked by a family pet at a home in Blackburn last night.
She was rushed to hospital but later died of her injuries.
A man, 24, and woman, 20, believed to be the girl’s parents, have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and are being interviewed by police.
Police were called to an address on Emily Street at 11pm last night by paramedics.
The breed of dog is not yet known, but police have seized the animal.
The relationship between the suspects and the child is unknown although the baby is not believed to have been at her own home when the attack took place.
A Lancashire Constabulary spokesman said: “The baby was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital but sadly passed away a short time later.
“The dog has been seized from the address by police. Officers are continuing to carry out enquiries at the scene and investigate the circumstances of what has happened.
“A 26-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman have both been arrested on suspicion of child neglect and are currently in police custody.”
Detective Superintendent Simon Giles said: “This is a tragic incident and specially trained officers are offering support to the wider family. A full investigation is underway.”
