Six young Iranians sentenced to 91 lashes each for dancing to ‘Happy’ by Pharrell Williams
Six young friends have been told they face 91 lashes and six months in prison for dancing to Pharrell Williams’ Happy.
The fun-loving group of friends in Tehran were arrested after the video was put online and the person filming them faces a year in prison.
But they have been given a reprieve in that the sentence is suspended for the next three years.
Tehran Police charged the six dancers due to the fact that the women were dancing alongside men and were not wearing the hijab (headscarf).
They were then forced to go on Iranian state TV and apologise for their actions and admit they were ‘tricked’ into creating the video.
Amnesty International Champa Patel spoke of their trial: ‘Arresting people for dancing in a video tribute to a song called Happy is taking things to a new level of dark irony even for the authoritarian Iranian authorities.’
Pharrell Williams tweeted about their sentencing saying: ‘It’s beyond sad these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness.’
