A waterway in eastern China has mysteriously turned a blood red color.
Residents in Zhejiang province said the river looked normal at 5 a.m. Beijing time on Thursday morning. Within an hour, the entire river turned crimson. Residents also said a strange smell wafted through the air.
“The really weird thing is that we have been able to catch fish because the water is normally so clear,” one local villager commented on China’s microblogging site Weibo.
Inspectors from the Wenzhou Environmental Protection Bureau said they have not found the cause of the incident, although water samples seem to indicate the suspicious color was a result of illegal dumping in the river.
“We suspect that somebody dumped artificial coloring in the water because he thought the typhoon yesterday would cause heavy rain, and nobody would notice [the color],” Jianfeng Xiao, Chief of the bureau told China News.
“It turned out there wasn’t heavy rainfall yesterday, so the evidence is left behind,” Xiao said.
Xiao said there is a paper manufacturer, a food coloring company and clothing-maker a long the river. The bureau is still investigating the incident.

Six young friends have been told they face 91 lashes and six months in prison for dancing to Pharrell Williams’ Happy.
The fun-loving group of friends in Tehran were arrested after the video was put online and the person filming them faces a year in prison.
But they have been given a reprieve in that the sentence is suspended for the next three years.
Tehran Police charged the six dancers due to the fact that the women were dancing alongside men and were not wearing the hijab (headscarf).
They were then forced to go on Iranian state TV and apologise for their actions and admit they were ‘tricked’ into creating the video.
Amnesty International Champa Patel spoke of their trial: ‘Arresting people for dancing in a video tribute to a song called Happy is taking things to a new level of dark irony even for the authoritarian Iranian authorities.’
Pharrell Williams tweeted about their sentencing saying: ‘It’s beyond sad these kids were arrested for trying to spread happiness.’

There are lots of stereotypes that gay people have to put up with, but Cameroon has come up with a new one and it’s illegal.
Drinking Bailey’s Irish Cream there can land you in prison because it is seen as a woman’s drink.
And the sentence for enjoying a bit of the creamy stuff? Up to five years in prison plus some fines.
Michel Togue, an attorney in Cameroon who has defended people accused of homosexuality, described how stereotypes are used in prosecutions.
He told the Think Progress blog: ‘To catch people having sex, to catch them in the act, you have to break the law. You have to violate their privacy, which is an offence.
‘But the police will not focus on the offence of breaking the privacy of someone, but they will focus on the fact that they saw two people of the same gender having sex.’
As well as his client who was caught drinking Bailey’s, Mr Togue says he has represented people who dress effeminately including a group of three men who were jailed for five years.
He concludes that he wants people in Cameroon to know that ‘a homosexual is our friend, is our brother, is our sister, is part of our family – is not a stranger, not someone coming from outside.’

A woman in search of her long-lost mother discovered she had married her own brother. Brazilian Adriana, 39, and her husband Leandro, 37, (pictured above kissing) have been together for 7 years and have a six-year-old daughter.
The couple, who refused to reveal their surnames, spent their lives trying to find their respective mothers, who were both called Maria, and had both abandoned their children when they were still babies.
But neither could have imagined that the women they had both been searching for could have been the same person.
Adriana, a cosmetics saleswoman, hadn’t seen her estranged mother since she was one year old, leaving her to be raised by the her father. Meanwhile, truck driver Leandro, who was brought up by his stepmother, knew his mother had also abandoned him in his hometown of Sao Paulo when he was eight years old.
While Leandro remained in the city, Adriana left their hometown to work as a housemaid, married for 15 years and had three children.
The pair met for the first time ten years ago after Adriana’s marriage broke down and she returned to Sao Paulo. They soon fell in love and moved in together.
Unable to give up the search for her mother, Adriana contacted a radio station in the city to ask for help.
This week the two were reunited live on air.
But at the end of the interview on Radio Globo’s The Time Is Now programme, which specializes in finding lost relatives, the mother revealed she also had a son who didn’t know her called Leandro.
Upon realizing her husband is also her brother, an emotional Adriana said: “I don’t believe that you’re telling me this. Leandro is my husband. Now I’m scared to go home and find out that Leandro doesn’t want me anymore. I love him so much.”
Adriana and Leandro told Radio Globo that they would stay together, despite the bombshell that they are actually brother and sister.
Adriana said: “Only death is going to separate us. All this happened because God wanted it to happen. Of course it would have been different if we had known all this before, but we didn’t and we fell in love. We thought it was funny that both our mothers had the same name, but it is a common name so we just thought it was a coincidence.
“At first we were really knocked by it all, but we had a family meeting and told everyone that we are going to stay husband and wife, whatever anyone might think. We have so many plans together. Nothing is going to break us up. Nothing.”
The couple, who said they didn’t blame their mother for leaving them, have spoken with her a number of times and plan to meet up soon.
A vet who posed with a gun for a selfie died shortly after shooting himself in the head by accident.
Oscar Aguilar showed off on Facebook by posting photos of himself in front of sports cars, sitting on motorbikes and hugging attractive women.
But the Mexican’s desire to impress proved his downfall when he borrowed the gun and snapped himself waving it about.
Neighbour Manfredo Paez, 57, said: ‘I heard a gunshot and then I heard somebody screaming.’
The 21-year-old died on the way to hospital in Mexico City.
He had failed to realise the gun was loaded, police said.
Here’s an update on rapper Andre Johnson who made headlines this past April when he cut off his own penis and jumped off a building….. He survived that mess but he’s now dickless!!!
A while back, Andre spoke to E! News exclusively about why he cut off his penis…and how he’s living life without it.
“Yes, I was using drugs that night, but I was in complete control. I cut it off because that was the root of all my problems. My solution to the problem was the realization that sex is for mortals, and I am a god…Those kinds of activities got me into trouble, and I came here to be a god.”
There were reports that doctors were able to reattach Andre’s penis, but he said that isn’t true.
“Doctor’s weren’t able to repair anything. But, it still gets hard, the little bit that I got. I still got some penis that works. It’s not the size of the prize, it’s the motion of the ocean. There’s no mystery to it, but they couldn’t reattach it. A penis is a penis is a penis.”
“I wasn’t having that much sex up to that point anyways. My days of reproducing are over. But now I’m a reborn man.”
Andre recalls the incident…
“I didn’t want to kill myself. That was just my response to the demons. They were doing their best to get to me, but being alive solidified my thoughts…I’m alive, penis or no penis.
“I had a psychologist I was seeing after I was released from hospital but I was quickly okayed after they said I had all my marbles…the lights were on in the attic.”
“People perceived me as crazy, so I never wanted to speak wholeheartedly on the matter. But now, in retrospect, the truth must be told.”
“Me and RZA (his music label) came to an understanding. I still write music, but I love comedy and we’re going to have a Wu-Tang writing team. I’m going to do stand up along with making music.”
